Our Story: 200 Years!

Our Story: 200 Years! is a legacy project video series, begun by the Mount Vernon, Ohio, Bicentennial Committee to celebrate the city’s bicentennial in 2005.  The Committee wanted to share its heritage with the young people of the County and all other citizens as well.  To do this, they developed a video series covering five topics: history, education, commerce, government, and lifestyle.

The history video was produced in two DVD’s, Our Story: The First Hundred Years, and Our Story: The Second Hundred Years.  Each video runs about 47 minutes and tells, through a narrator, artifacts, and oral history clips the history of Mount Vernon for the past two hundred years.  The Second Hundred Years, which includes a number of excerpts from oral history interviews, weaves a commentary on 20th century Mount Vernon that was awarded a bronze Telly.  Production of both videos was generously grant-supported by the Community Foundation of Mount Vernon-Knox County and by the Ohio Humanities Council.

The education video, Our Story: Frontier Schools Meet the Future, is, also produced in two DVD’s.  The first tells the story of schools in the city of Mount Vernon, while the second contains stories of school experiences that were just too good to leave out.

Both video sets, nicely boxed, are available for $24 total per set from Paragraphs Book Store.  Order forms are also available from the City of Mount Vernon, the Public Library of Mount Vernon & Knox County, the Knox County Historical Museum, and I-Conn Video.

"Small Towns Work," the third in our series addressing the history of Mount Vernon's economy, is currently in production.
